ISABELLA LOZANO Work About CV Contact

b. 1994, Londrina, Brazil

Influenced by personal experience of moving across different South American countries and the UK, my work currently explores subjects such as representation and the performance of identity, cultural in-betweenness, belonging and non-belonging, social nuances, notions of high and low status, and the tension between economic gain and its environmental and social consequences.

With a base in print, photography, and installation, my practice and research investigate the narrative power of everyday objects as symbolic actors and cultural signifiers, and how, through their consumption and disposal, meaning is assigned, circulated, and distorted. With a background in graphic and set design for the film industry, I’m interested in exploring the ways in which advertising and media both reflect and shape behaviours and identities, as well as how ideals circulate through commercial exchange, with a particular focus on the relationship between South America and the Global North.

Using humour and absurdity as a method, I situate my practice within the context of the mundane, exploring the coexistence of tragedy and comedy present in the everyday to create alternative storylines that highlight contradictions and question systems of value.
